Madrid Day 1 - The NYC of Europe

After a wonderful and charming Lisbon, we packed up for Madrid, Spain.  Expecting similar nice weather and friendly people, we did not get either of those in the 1st couple of hrs upon arrival.  When we were waiting for the luggage we discovered that there is a big festival called La Noche en Blanco (White Night) coming up the next day which they will party ALL night (tons of free events and free entry to most museums).  I kindly trying to share this information with some Chinese passengers on the plane with us, but for some reason they thought I was a taxi driver trying to solicit business!! RUDE!

When we made it to the hotel, we found out the place we booked is full.  We had a lot of questions about the but the reception guy would not let us speak a word until he is done with his errands.  Finally, he decided to speak to us and let us know that they have another building down the street.  We quickly got to our room, dropped our stuff and head straight towards Market San Miguel.

Halfway there, it start to rain.  But nothing can stop us, we are HUNGRY!  Market San Miguel is some what touristy, but we were definitely not disappointed.  Check out all the meat:

We wanted to try everything on the menu but our ordering ability is limited.  Good thing the old man behind the counter was helpful.  He immediately ordered four things for us and man it turned out to be pretty expensive.  After lunch, we made an important discovery, we found the center of Spain:

We ended our first night in an awesome tapas place and wash down our dinner with a couple of nice and cold beer:

Can't wait till the White Night festival tomorrow!

Barcelona - La Merce Fire Works is AWESOME!!!

We went to the opening fireworks for La Merce 09 (Barcelona's Festival) last night and we thought it was great!  The show was put on by a US company.  The crowd kept clapping when the team did an awesome display.  Sitting next to the sea w/ thousands of ppl stretch out on the beach, watching this great display was truly an experience....until tonight!!! Holy COW! Tonight's display of fireworks from the folks in Valencia, Spain was even BETTER!  They started off slow...we were saying their display of fireworks are some what mediocre compare to the Americans but then they started to show how wrong we were.  They exploded fireworks like drum beats playing, shooting fireworks into the sea(which exploded like thunder!), and then ending the show with this huge display(which we happen to capture. YAY!!!).  We can't wait for tomorrow's display from France and the ending ceremony fireworks on Sunday.  Enjoy :)

Current Whereabouts----> BARCELONA

Yes we are in Barcelona.  Yes we just left Sevilla today.  Yes we still have not posted Madrid and Sevilla.
F says he will blog about Madrid since he if more fond of that city than me. (ehehe hey can you blame a girl who had food poisoned there?!!? No it is NOT my fault for those of you that might be thinking it was). But guess WHAT!?!? LOL We have hit another FESTIVAL and this time it is in Barcelona! Talk about perfect non-planning kinda luck we have been having.  Free concerts, arts, parades, fireworks, something about Fire Run, and FREE MUSEUMS!!! And it all started today till Sunday.
When we were in Madrid for the "White Night" we got back around 3am because I started to look green after standing in line for 40mins waiting for these artist's work. ehehe
We had just came back from Las Rambla.  Had a blast! I have to say Sevilla so far is my fav and Barcelona is gaining speed quickly.

Picture was taking just 30mins ago.  Showing one of the many parades of the Giants.  It consists of bands infront, "giant" puppets prancing around and their fellow friends/family throwing confetti at onlookers. Our favorite group was the one posing as Thriller - Michael Jackson.  We took video that we will post once we have caught up with our post.
p.s. Thanks for all the emails.  Keep them coming.

Lisbon - Lisbon & Sintra

I finally have some time today to catch up on blogging.  Why?  I will explain later.  Yes it has to do with 2 words....Food Poisoning.

We'd spent about 3 nights and 4.25 days in Lisbon.

Let me start by posting what we had to eat in the plane here.  Lufthansa economy class wasn't bad at all.
by the time they reached us, they had ran out of the chicken entre.  So as you can see we had pasta with spinach and tomato sauce.  First time I have ever seen airlines using non-disposable utensils.  Which is awesome! cut down on waste.

Arrived in Lisbon around 2:30pm.  The B&B was only 4 months old as we'd found out from the person who is staffed there.  Clean, spacious, good location, reasonably priced and friendly staff.  One thing though, their shower was a bid odd.  The shower glass only goes half way without a door or any shower curtains to cover the rest of the bath.  One would have to stand in a way to the water won't splash outside to the rest of the bathroom. HA! I should've taken a picture of it.
We did not do much on the first day, took a nap and then took the boat across to small town for dinner.

Seafood soupy dinner with rice.  It hit the spot. Not bad at all.  Thank god we have done our research before getting here.  As soon as you sit down, the waiter will bring a plate of pate, a plate of cheese and a basket of bread.  And they all cost $!  We added them up and if we even touch those things it would've cost us around $23 euro.  So we just simply left them aside and he came to pick them up later without charging us.  No sir, we are not in the free bread US anymore.

Day 2 - As you can see earlier we spent the whole day making up for inactivity the day before.  We went EVERYWHERE!  Thank god the public transportation were FREE!  I will just continue on where we had left off from the earlier post. hahaha I had to go back to look where I had left off.
After a wonderful view of the sunset and St. George castle from the opposite side of another hill, we were on the hunt for dinner.  Walking around Alfama we have stumbled on this wonderful little restaurant.
Atmosphere was great(meaning low candlelight everywhere, price wasn't terribly expensive(cheap I would say compare to Madrid now), and the waiter was super nice.

I had the blacken pork, which was cooked perfectly and he had miso/portugese style salmon.  Dinner was good and satisfying.

How else can we make dinner more perfect? YES! another trip to the pastries king of Lisbon would do it!  I also wanted to take another pictures of the two monuments in the night time.  I was a bit disappointed because they weren't lighted at all.  But the portugese egg pastries soon cures my disappointment.

Day 3
Since we had finished sightseeing most of the things in Lisbon.  We'd decided to take a day trip to Sintra.  A 45 minutes train ride from Lisbon Rosio terminal.
First stop in Sintra - "Quinta da Regaleira is classified a World Heritage site by UNESCO. This magnificent estate is designed by an Italian architect Luigi Manini for wealthy Brazilian merchant António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro at the turn of 20th century." - no I did not write that, yes I had copy and paste it from the Lisbon Guide.
We had walked to Quinta da Regaleira from the town center which took us about 7 mins.  This is an estate alright.  Talk about humongous!  It is a bit creepy somehow.  We walked around looking at fountains after fountains, wells after wells and tons of caves!!! Caves and wells which connects from each other through dark tunnels.  Let me show you an example.

This is a fountain, behind the fountain is dark cave leading to another cave(according to the map).  Leading you here to this empty well.
Up above the empty well...and...

Down and down we went into the empty well.  Yes...creepy...what was even weirder, there were even more tunnels and caves in the well.

We followed one that was lighted and came out here.

Maybe that's where Hugh Hefner gets his idea for his grotto?

This place is huge!  There are more caves and gardens and fountains.
But here's a picture of the main house.

We bought a tour bus ticket for an easier way to get to all these places.  Man we have to give it to the bus drivers here at Sintra.  It is on top of  a hill.  Roads are narrow and winding up and down with constructions parts of the way but they were able to take on these roads like they were driving a tiny little Smart Cars. But instead they are driving these huge buses full of tourists.
Up and Up the winding narrow roads, we arrived at Palácio Nacional da Pena.

We had bought tickets to go into the castle where they still have all its furniture.  Quite impressive compare to Versailles. Sorry they did not allow pictures inside the palace.

Windy and very coldddddd...Brrrrr...

Another picture of Pena.

How high are we? this is a picture of the Castelo dos Mouros from Castle Pena.

p.s. these pictures were taken with our new panasonic ZS1 camera.
pps - About food poisoning.  We have no idea how it happen to me.  It must be either the duck(the only thing I had that was different from him) I had for lunch(at a white linen restaurant) or the chocolate w/ churros. ARGG it was painful....I will spare details(which involves me throwing up quite a few times) and was bedridden for the whole next day.  Please don't feel bad for me because I was not the one stuck in a tiny hotel room with a food poisoned girlfriend.

Current Whereabouts

We have 2 days to catch up on our blog on Lisbon. Sorry due to my jetlag brain( I am the only one with this problem), words just won't come out of my tired brain. HA! It s eems I am almost there with this jetlag thing.  I just hope it won't get screwed up again when we fly to Egypt.
Guess what folks! We are currently in Madrid, Spain.
Compare to Lisbon, Madrid is a bigger city with the big city flare.  We have been pretty lucky so far.  How so? Well, when we got to Lisbon the public transportation were FREE! and now in Madrid, they are having this "La Noche En Blanco" today.  La Noche En Blanco, is today and from 9pm tonight they are having artist all around the city center, from Paseo Del Prado to Puerta Del Sol to the Palacio Real.  Artist who paints, dance, act, Jazz; you name it they have it for FREE!  Not only free entertainments but even ALL of the museums are free all night till the morning hours(5am).  The city calls it "No one shall sleep tonight".  We slept in late this morning so we can be up all night checking out the festivities.
Will have pictures soon.
Note:  We both agreed Lisbon has friendlier people.  And whole lot cheaper!!! Tapas hopping aren't cheap, as we found out.

Lisbon - Belem & Alfama - part 2

Jeronimos Monastery was just right around the corner from the bakery/cafe.  And here lies the famous Vasco de Gama and Luis de Camoes. De Gama left his mark by sailing the high seas and discovering the sea route to India. Camoes is known for his literary efforts.  Arches that was in the ceiling was pretty spectacular.

Entrance
Inside the chapel

The Famous son of Portugal, Vasco De Gama.
We also got suckered into the carriage museum. Considered one of the finest collections of it's kind in the world, the collection is housed in a building originally used as a riding school for the royal family. The building itself is notable for it's ornate painted ceiling and Doric columns.  Cinderella eat your heart out! Talk about golden chariots from tiny for kids to the most ornate ones for the lucky Kings and Queens.

Next, off to Alfama, to the St. George Castle for the view of Lisbon.  Lisbon is build on top of 7 hills and I can see why people who lives in Lisbon have amazing legs.  Talk about steep hills.  It was worth the hike! LOL actually we took the famous 28 tram instead.

We actually hiked up another hill to get to where this picture was taken.  Call it luck or just another reason to explore things around the corner (see a hill? ok let's go up!) and stumbled upon this great place to see the sunset for the day.
